Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the surf's edge and and the beach. Back and forth this person went. As the man approached he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide.
The man was stuck by the the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish. As he approached the person continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the surf.
As he came up to the person he said, "You must be crazy. There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can't possibly make a difference." The person looked at the man. He then stooped down and pick up one more starfish and threw it back into the ocean. He turned back to the man and said, "It sure made a difference to that one!"
黄昏时刻，正值海水退潮，成千上万只的海星被海浪冲到沙滩上来。脱离海水的海星，像失去母亲的婴儿，痛苦地扭曲它们的身体，挣扎著想要返回母亲的怀抱，但海水却越退越远。一个来到沙滩玩耍的小男孩看到这幅景象，就弯下腰来，捡起被冲上岸的海星一一掷回海中，以免它们困脱离海洋过久而死亡。
远远走来一个在沙滩漫步的老人，看著忙碌的少年好一会而摇摇头说：“被冲上岸的海星这么多，你不可能将它们全部都扔回海中。而且今天扔回去了，明天可能又被冲上来，将这里的海星都扔回去了，世界上其他地方又有更多的海星被冲上岸。难道你不知道自己再怎么做，结果都一样吗？”
“我知道,”少年笑一笑，弯下腰，又捡起一枚海星，将它掷回海里，说：“但是对这只海星来说，可就不一样了。”
